Now let’s be clear… I am NOT mad at the people who posted comments… no, I salute your spirit, desire, zeal, fortitude and your hard work.

No… I got MAD at the dream stealers and naysayers that stood in these people’s way. The people that discouraged them every step of the way. The people who sold them worthless goods and services. The members of their own tribe that told them they will never succeed. I got mad at all the false promises and hopes that had stood in their way.

In That Place…

 When I was starting out, just trying to find some way to provide for myself. I remember feeling like a “deer in the headlights”, not knowing what to do next.

You see I wasn’t always a successful teacher and healer. But I am getting ahead of myself. It all started about ten years ago when I was about 29 years old, and I’ll admit it…

Ten years ago, I was a frustrated and depressed office worker, struggling to find meaning in my work.

I WAS MISERABLE.

One day, after making a presentation to my boss demonstrating why I deserved a raise for increased knowledge and responsibilities, he smiled and said to me, “Beth, that was an excellent presentation, but you’ll be lucky if you’re making $40,000 per year five years from now.” I had to bite my tongue so I didn’t burst out laughing. (Even in my depression, I still had a sense of humor!) I knew I had to get out of that job pronto – but to do “what” instead?

And while I put on a bright face at work, I would come home to an empty apartment – I had nary a pet, plant or partner to greet me. I would cry myself to sleep, thinking, “There has to be more to life than simply working to pay bills and buy more stuff! There has to be a purpose to this life.”

I longed for meaning, purpose and passion. How could someone who wanted meaning so desperately seem to be so inept at finding it? My darkest hour came when I realized I had become suicidal. I was deep in the throes of a gripping and terrifying spiritual crisis (although I didn’t know that’s what it was at the time).

Shortly after the meeting with my boss, with almost money and no idea of what I was going to do, I walked away from that “golden opportunity” job. Forever.

It felt good to leave that job, but I soon realized I had no way to support myself and pay the bills.

As I coldly contemplated various ways of removing myself from the planet, the power of my intention frightened me. In desperation, I called a friend (knowing that I didn’t have the guts to actually pull it off). Telling her of my plan to leave and expecting her sympathy, she said, “Beth, that’s the most selfish thing I’ve ever heard you say! You need to snap out of it. Do you not realize how much you are loved? That makes me sad.”

Getting defensive, I said, “Okay, then… what should I do?”

“How about asking?” she said.

“Asking whom?” I said.

“Uh, the Universe,” she said.

I decided I would heed her advice and pray. It was something I hadn’t done since my days in Catholic school. I kneeled down by my bed, hands folded, head bent in solemn repose, and said this prayer, “God, Great Spirit, Universe, if you show me my Life Purpose, I will forever be your humble servant.” At the time, I didn’t realize the power of this prayer.
